Gloom and Doom or Boom for British Small Businesses?

Britain is now officially in recession as the economy shrank by 0.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2011. According to the ONS, the economic slump was driven by the construction sector. However, even in tough times and tough sectors business opportunities abound – if companies are prepared to be creative.

BBS client Middlesex Flooring summed it up nicely in its latest newsletter -

“Arguably, it's more important now than ever for people to feel motivated and inspired by their surroundings, whether that's in a corporate office, an education environment or a commercial space. The recession has, in fact, inspired some creative trends, such as highlighting key areas with contrasting colours, creating themed areas, and installing flooring tiles in a non-directional manner. Where budgets are not available for an entire refurbishment, it is possible to make a dramatic difference by making a small and effective change.”

So there’s no need for gloom and doom – with boom comes opportunity and with recession comes opportunity – you just need to recognise that the type of opportunity may be different!
